Kawasaki Disease Questions to ask your Doctor

Diagnosis & Initial Assessment

  1. What tests confirmed the diagnosis of Kawasaki Disease?

  2. Were there any signs of coronary artery involvement (aneurysms)?

  3. What is the current size and z-score of the coronary arteries?

  4. Was this measured by ultrasound, CT, or MRI?

  5. Will more imaging be done to confirm or track changes?


Treatment Plan

  1. What medications is my child being prescribed and why?

  2. What are the side effects we should watch for with aspirin/clopidogrel/IVIG/steroids?

  3. How long will my child need to stay on these medications?

  4. If the aneurysm is medium or giant, will there be additional treatments?

  5. Are there options if my child doesn’t respond to the first round of IVIG?


Monitoring & Follow-Up

  1. How often will we need follow-up echocardiograms or other scans?

  2. What changes in size/z-score would be considered concerning or reassuring?

  3. Can aneurysms shrink or disappear over time? What’s the likelihood in our case?

  4. Are there warning signs that something might be wrong with my child’s heart that we should watch for at home?


Activity, Diet, and Lifestyle

  1. Can my child return to school, sports, or physical activity? If not, when?

  2. Should we make any changes to diet (e.g., foods that interact with aspirin)?

  3. Is there anything we should avoid while they’re recovering (e.g., vaccinations, travel, supplements)?


Long-Term Outlook

  1. Will my child need to see a cardiologist long-term?

  2. What are the long-term risks with a medium or giant aneurysm?

  3. Will this affect their life expectancy or future health?

  4. Are there emotional or psychological effects we should look out for in our child after hospitalization or diagnosis?


Support and Communication

  1. Who should we contact if we notice new symptoms?

  2. Is there a Kawasaki Disease specialist or cardiac specialist we should be referred to?

  3. Can you give us a summary of the diagnosis and treatment to help us explain it to schools or family members?
