KF Trustees Report 2024 - 2025

THE KAWASAKI FUND (Registered Charity No. 1064518)

The Kawasaki Fund is a charity dedicated to addressing Kawasaki Disease, a serious illness primarily affecting children under five that initially mimics severe flu but can lead to fatal heart aneurysms if left undiagnosed. While Kawasaki disease has been the subject of more research over recent decades, there is still much needed to be done to establish its cause, to find more effective treatments for it and, ultimately, to develop a vaccine against it. To combat this, the charity focuses on raising medical and parental awareness, providing a telephone support service for specialist referrals and ultrasounds, and offering financial grants of up to £500 (and occasionally more) to families in hardship.

Apart from donations from the public and various charitable foundations, for the past decade or so, the charity’s income has arisen through sharing an awarded property with small enterprises and other charities. However, the organization is currently facing a critical turning point; following the loss of its primary income-generating property in July 2024, gross income plummeted by over 75%, forcing the reluctant "mothballing" of major clinical events and social media projects to conserve funds. Despite these financial constraints and the ongoing frustration of navigating a high-turnover, decentralized NHS system to ensure clinical standards, the Fund continues its research through volunteer efforts, driven by the steady progress being made in early detection and rising awareness among clinicians.
